I am lucky enough to live overlooking Swan Bay near Queenscliff, from my studio I can see the weather fronts coming in through the Heads, the reflections in the water of Swan Bay, ever changing, I am always inspired to try and capture these transient moments in my paintings.
My inspiration is most often from nature itself, I like that natures colour combinations can be outrageous! but that they always work, and are always surprising, from a subtle mist hovering in the trees, a stunning sunset, that you wouldn’t believe if you didn’t see it with your own eyes, or even a flower petal, fragile and delicate in structure but bold and audacious in colour, a metaphor for life, as it matures developing the complex and subtle nuances of decay.
I’m always searching in my water paintings to capture the transient movement of light through water, I try to capture that fluidity, seeking not to freeze the image.
I often use a background of silver leaf to reflect the layers of tinted oil glazes, to achieve the effect of looking through translucent colour at colour, so nothing is solid or static. Sometimes there seems to be a fleeting glimpse of a fish - or a platypus - or was it ?
